Avulsion
When
a whole tooth fall out from the socket it is termed as avulsion.
It usually happens in front teeth of children or young adults
usually during contact sports.
If
the tooth is avulsed it may be possible to put the same tooth back
into its socket. Steps to followed are
-
Place
the avulsed tooth back into the socket. If this is painful
then carry the tooth to the dentist either in milk or ice or
just in the mouth.
-
Do
not brush off the tissues from the tooth.
-
Contact
the dentist within 30 mins. of avulsion.
If
conditions are favourable the dentist may be able to place the
tooth back into the socket. He will then take help of wires or
light cure composite resin to hold in place till it is finally
accepted back and becomes firm.
If
the tooth is fractured midway then there might be pain as the
nerve of the tooth becomes open. In these circumstances Root Canal
treatment of that tooth followed by capping or veneering may be
advised.
If
left untreated there may be pain or swelling. Over a period of
time the untreated tooth will turn black in color.

This
is a common problem in hypertensive patients. Bleeding may not
step after tooth removal or may begin after 24 - 48 hrs. of
removal. Under any of the above circumstances your dentist needs
to be contacted immediately. Bleeding is usually controlled by
pressure packs, external ice application, placing of stitches in
the area of tooth removal, liguation of blood vessels, electro
cauterization etc.
